Gingrich hits Obama as anti-gun at NRA meeting

Sadly, I'm not at this year's NRA Annual Meeting as I have been many times before. I would have enjoyed this speech.

While I know that there are those who really dislike Newt Gingrich, I am most definitely not one of them. Newt is a brilliant man who has a complete grasp of the Conservative philosophy.

During a speech on Friday at the NRA's Annual Meeting, Newt unloaded on Obama ...

“In every possible way, the Obama administration is the most consistently anti-gun administration and anti-Second Amendment administration that we have ever seen,” the former House Speaker said with characteristic bombast."

NRA Chief Says Obama Re-election Threatens Gun Rights

Definitely something we all knew already ... but it certainly bears repeating.

The chief executive officer of the National Rifle Association said in a talk here today he worries about the future of gun rights if President Obama is re-elected and makes more nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court. “I believe that the Second Amendment hangs by one vote, and this 2012 election could break the back of it one way or the other,” said Wayne LaPierre, the association’s CEO and executive vice president, in a packed room at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service.

Stop "McCarthyite" Gun Control!

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy is at it again, trying to restrict more of your gun rights.  Even though there is no evidence that gun control has worked in the past, McCarthy is now trying to ban one of the most useful, firearms-related items that you could ever use for self-defense.

Rest In Peace Mr Volkmer

Democrat Harold Volkmer, former U.S. Congressman from Missouri passed away on Saturday, April 16 2011.  He was one of the primary sponsors of the 1986 McClure-Volkmer Act that came to be known as the Firearm Owners Protection Act. 

After his 1996 defeat for his 10th bid for reelection, he was elected to the board of the National Rifle Association where he served until his retirement.

We stand in recognition of Mr Volkmer's years of service to our cause and offer our condolences to his family.

Ignored But Not Forgotten

Sadly, this blog has been unattended for the last 2+ years while my attention has been focused elsewhere. Lately however, there have been far too many signs that our freedoms are increasingly in danger. It's time to get back in the game.

The Heller Decision and the Presidential Election

Two days have passed since the Supreme Courts decision which upheld the Second Amendment as an individual right ... and the new continues.  I'll address some of the already-filed lawsuits in other posts.  For now, let's take a look at how the decision changes things for Republicans and Democrats this fall.

Those on the anti-gun side seem to think that the validation of an individual right takes away any political hay that our side might try to make.  However, it's already clear that the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other gun rights groups think otherwise.

The NRA has not stopped talking about the decision, and it appears they plan to continue on this track.  The belief is that by highlighting the case, gun owners will become motivated to help eliminate other bans in existence around the country.  The idea is that this would further clarify the positions of the anti-gun politicians around the country (mostly democrats ... but certainly not all).

The Democrats and Gun Control

David Kopel had a great opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal yesterday.  He begins:

Imagine an election race of Pat Robertson versus James Dobson, each of them appearing at organic grocery stores and Starbucks throughout Massachusetts, with each candidate insisting that he alone deserves the vote of gay-marriage advocates. An equally silly spectacle is taking place these days in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky, as Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama compete for the pro-gun vote.

If it weren't so serious .. it would be funny.  But our freedoms are to be taken seriously.  Neither of these two candidates are in any way interested in preserving our Second Amendment freedoms.

Post-election Autopsy

Both Democrats and Republicans are still busy figuring out what happened in the Nov. 7 elections. The former are trying to understand why they won so they can repeat their performance in 2008. The latter need to know why they lost so they can change and make a comeback.

Not As Bad As It Seems?

Like most gun owners, I sat at home during the evening of November 7 and hung my head in despair.  As anyone will tell you, most Democrats are NOT friends of gun owners.  Most ... but not all.

As the linked article below discusses, the 'Blue Dog Democrats' are helping to bridge the party gap  The article goes on to say:

" ... a class of Democrats called the "Blue Dogs," meaning they take centrist stances in their party. The Blue Dog Democrats — composed of more than 40 members — usually are pro-gun and receive high ratings from the National Rifle Association. Many usually are further to the right on issues like abortion and want to limit immigration.

Andrew Arulanandam, a spokesman for the NRA, said Mahoney and the 60 other Democrats who received an "A rating" from the group met certain requirements and received positive feedback from local volunteers who had been following their campaigns."

We'll see what happens.  With the still large numbers of Republicans, added to the number of pro-gun Dems ... there still could be sunny days ahead, at least in the pro-gun arena.  That's not to say that they're aren't other issues waiting on the horizon.  Don't lower your guard.  At Patrick Henry said many years ago:

"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel."

We'll keep a close eye on every last one of them.
