Gingrich hits Obama as anti-gun at NRA meeting

Sadly, I'm not at this year's NRA Annual Meeting as I have been many times before. I would have enjoyed this speech.

While I know that there are those who really dislike Newt Gingrich, I am most definitely not one of them. Newt is a brilliant man who has a complete grasp of the Conservative philosophy.

During a speech on Friday at the NRA's Annual Meeting, Newt unloaded on Obama ...

“In every possible way, the Obama administration is the most consistently anti-gun administration and anti-Second Amendment administration that we have ever seen,” the former House Speaker said with characteristic bombast."

Success in the Sunshine State

As a former Florida resident, I keep a close eye on what's happening in the Sunshine state.

Several pieces of pro-gun legislation have been working their way through the Florida state legislature in recent weeks. Two are now on their way to Governor Rick Scott for his signature. The other still needs to pass the house but that's expected to occur shortly.

On their way now for the Governor's signature:

1. Provides that the ability to question patients about firearms is only allowed if the medical care practitioner, Emergency Medical Technician or paramedic believes in good faith that the information is necessary to the patient’s medical care or safety or the safety of others.
2. Provides penalties for government officials, local governments and agencies that willfully and knowingly violate the state firearms preemption law. State law prohibits local governments and government agencies from adopting any gun control ordinance or regulations. 

Finally, Senate Bill 234,  passed out of the Senate and is now heading to the House. SB 234 provides that concealed weapons license holders are not in violation of the law if and when their concealed firearm is accidentally displayed under certain circumstances. The house is expected to approve this bill shortly.

University of Iowa Student Group Backs Carrying Guns on Campus

Across the country, numerous states are considering legislation to allow students with Concealed Carry licenses to carry their weapons on campus.

As you might imagine, there are many exhibiting signs of Chicken Little syndrome. There are others who understand the need:

The new group, Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, is a UI chapter of a national group that has about 43,000 members. Iowa State University also has a chapter. They advocate that people who are licensed to carry firearms should be allowed the same protection on campus that they have in most other places under Iowa law, August Meyer, UI senior in psychology and a UI chapter founder, said. “A person who is licensed to carry a firearm off campus isn’t going to be any more dangerous on campus,” Meyer, 26, said. “Public safety is our No. 1 priority and concern.”

I regularly hear the naysayers claim that the local or campus police are more than prepared to handle any situation that might come along and that students don't need to be armed.  You know ... I expect the 32 people who died at Viginia Tech would take issue with that.

Attention Florida ... Write to your State Senators NOW to Support SB-234

Members of the Florida Senate need to know that you want them to pass SB-234 by Sen. Greg Evers to protect your firearms rights from abusive anti-gunners.

SB-234 by Sen. Greg Evers (R) is a bill that makes two (2) much needed changes to the "Right-to-Carry" law -- also known as the Concealed Weapons Licensing law.  It also makes changes to the firearms purchase law to conform to federal law.

The bill basically does three (3) following things:

1. Provides that concealed weapons license holders may also carry openly -- to prevent license holders from being charged with the crime of violating the "Open Carry" law because a concealed firearm accidentally or inadvertently became visible. 
2. Provides that concealed weapons license holders may store a firearm in private vehicle anywhere the vehicle is lawfully parked except those places that are exempted under s. 790.251(7) -- the parking lot law.
3. Removes the obsolete firearms purchase in contiguous state law previously required by federal law for out of state purchases of long guns and replaces it with language to conform to current federal requirements that allows purchase of long guns in other states.

Massachusetts Sued Over Gun Rights of Legal Immigrants

At issue here is the basic right of self-defense. It's a core concept for many of us in the gun-rights movement. 

What we have before us is the fact that the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts (#3 for the strictest gun laws in the U.S. per the Brady Campaign) has a law on the books that denies legal non-U.S. citizens the right to possess a handgun in their own homes.

Under the current law in Massachusetts, legal permanent residents -- who carry what is commonly referred to as a "green card" -- are not allowed to hold a firearm identification card or license to carry of any kind. Instead, they must apply for a resident alien permit, which allows a person to possess only a “low capacity” rifle or shotgun.

Therein lies the case. The SAF, a non-profit group dedicated to the right to keep and bear arms, and the plaintiffs, believe that under the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution -- which gives Americans the right to bear arms -- there is no language that restricts firearms rights and privileges for lawfully admitted residents based on citizenship.

NRA Chief Says Obama Re-election Threatens Gun Rights

Definitely something we all knew already ... but it certainly bears repeating.

The chief executive officer of the National Rifle Association said in a talk here today he worries about the future of gun rights if President Obama is re-elected and makes more nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court. “I believe that the Second Amendment hangs by one vote, and this 2012 election could break the back of it one way or the other,” said Wayne LaPierre, the association’s CEO and executive vice president, in a packed room at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service.

Stop "McCarthyite" Gun Control!

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy is at it again, trying to restrict more of your gun rights.  Even though there is no evidence that gun control has worked in the past, McCarthy is now trying to ban one of the most useful, firearms-related items that you could ever use for self-defense.

Rest In Peace Mr Volkmer

Democrat Harold Volkmer, former U.S. Congressman from Missouri passed away on Saturday, April 16 2011.  He was one of the primary sponsors of the 1986 McClure-Volkmer Act that came to be known as the Firearm Owners Protection Act. 

After his 1996 defeat for his 10th bid for reelection, he was elected to the board of the National Rifle Association where he served until his retirement.

We stand in recognition of Mr Volkmer's years of service to our cause and offer our condolences to his family.

Freedom Update - Ohio Legislature Overrides Governor's Veto

This past week, Ohio Governor Bob Taft's (R) veto of crucial statewide preemption legislation was overridden by the state legislature. This was the first time in 29 years that the Ohio legislature overturned a Governor's veto.  On Thursday, December 7, the State House voted 71-21 to override House Bill 347.  On Tuesday, December 12, the State Senate also voted (21-12) to override the veto, with three Democratic Senators voting in favor of the measure.   

Championed by Representative Jim Aslanides (R-94), HB 347 will create statewide preemption ensuring that firearm laws are uniform throughout the state. Currently, 43 states have similar laws.  Passing statewide preemption eliminates problems for gun owners who have been unduly burdened by local ordinances, such as the Columbus "assault weapons ban."  In addition, this legislation will correct a number of problems that have surfaced during the past year for Right-to-Carry permit holders. The most common complaint for license holders has been the "plain sight" requirement in a motor vehicle. HB 347 will eliminate this requirement.

Allen bill would allow guns in national parks

WASHINGTON -- Departing U.S. Sen. George Allen, honoring a campaign pledge, has quietly introduced a bill that would let visitors carry a concealed firearm into a national park.

The Virginia Republican wrote to the Virginia Gun Owners Coalition a Nov. 4 letter outlining his gun views and mentioning his efforts to urge the secretary of the Interior to repeal the gun ban in national parks.
