Getting the Gun Vote

Sandy Froman, immediate past president of the National Rifle Association of America, has penned a great piece over at Townhall.com about the role of gunowners in the 2008 presidential election.  She writes:

As the premier organization representing American gun owners, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has taken center stage in the ongoing election drama. To stop anti-gun presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, gun owners must unite to protect their Second Amendment rights. With early primaries right around the corner, there’s no time to lose.

Republican presidential candidates lined up to spend time with the NRA at its Celebration of American Values in Washington, D.C. Leading candidates of one of America’s major political parties set aside a day of campaigning to speak to NRA members.

Sandy closes with the question:

Who will be president if America’s 90 million gun owners speak with one voice?

How Wiiiidiculous!

I'll be honest ...

I would estimate that I have killed thousands ... perhaps hundreds of thousands ... of aliens, zombies, Nazis, and opposing forces of every kind.  All death by video game.  On the flip side, I have never drawn and fired a weapon at a human.  How, after shooting, killing, murdering all of those pixelated bad guys, is it possible that I've never turned a weapon on someone else? 

Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?  Of course it's ridiculous.  What else would you expect out of the PRNJ (Peoples Republic of New Jersey).  A blog post under the heading 'Parental Guidance' is blasting Nintendo for their upcoming Wii Zapper accessory which will allow the user to connect the Wiimote and the nunchuk in a futuristic space blaster kind of thing (shown at left).

As of this time, there were 81 comments posted to the piece.  There are a few off the wall comments like this:

"Great, this is what we need. Children with guns learning how to aim and shoot. Then we can sit back and wonder what is happening to our country with kids killing kids......what's next? Could we make it squirt blood, too?"

While I have not counted and categorized each response, most of those making  a comment are not of the same mindset.  Many make the valid point that it's up to each parent to decide what comes in the house ... Nintendo won't be forcing you to take it home.  Others note how we adults often grew up with a BB gun and we haven't drawn on our neighbors (not to mention the fact that earlier Nintendo games also had similar gun accessories).  Still others point out that the Nintendo Wii has as many adults as players as they do children.

Irresponsibly Gun Shy

This week, the panel that reviewed the shooting at Virginia Tech sent their report to the governor.  As one might have expected, their review was long on speculation and short on worthwhile, non-biased recommendations.

In an excellent review titled "Irresponsibly Gun Shy", Robert VerBruggen of The American Spectator analyzes the report's anti-gun statements and conclusions.  Here's a peek:

The panel also recommends requiring background checks for private sales at gun shows. But again, the facts are that Cho didn't buy his gun from a show, and he passed a background check. And only about 1 percent(pdf) of crime guns come from gun shows anyway. Not only would the policy not have affected the Virginia Tech shooting, it wouldn't prevent many others, either.

Clearly, the panel didn't let the facts stand in the way of their agenda.
