My thoughts and prayers go out to each family who lost a loved one at Virginia Tech this week. I pray the Lord brings you peace.
Years ago, this author lost a five year-old cousin to a fatal gunshot. He was an adorable little boy whose life was cut short because the parents of another child hadn't properly secured their firearm. Their child found the gun, and decided to play with it. Tragically, my cousin (and his family) paid the price. That little boy died ... not because a bullet entered his body, but because someone wasn't careful.
This week, 32 people (and one monster) died. They died because Seung-Hui Cho was a deranged killer, who had displayed one warning sign after another ... and no one did anything. They did not die because two eeeevvvviillll handguns jumped into his hands and said "let's go kill some people."
Statistics indicate that over half of American homes have at least one firearm. But you know what, the overwhelming majority aren't being used to kill anyone. In fact, many are used to save lives. For example, as reported in the Patriot Post:
In 2002, at the Appalachian School of Law just up the road from Virginia Tech, a Nigerian student, who had flunked out, returned to campus, murdered three people and wounded three others. Fortunately, his killing spree was interrupted by two students who had retrieved handguns from their vehicles and held the murderer at gunpoint until police arrived.
If only there had been an legally-armed student at VT that day! The news stories might not have been so grim. Because you see ... the whole idea of 'Gun-free School Zones' is pretty stupid. All it does is pretty much guarantee that no law-abiding citizen will be able to stop the bad guys!
In a column penned by Ann Coulter this week, she said:
Apparently, even crazy people prefer targets that can't shoot back. The reason schools are consistently popular targets for mass murderers is precisely because of all the idiotic "Gun-Free School Zone" laws.
From the people who brought you "zero tolerance," I present the Gun-Free Zone! Yippee! Problem solved! Bam! Bam! Everybody down! Hey, how did that deranged loner get a gun into this Gun-Free Zone?
... Needless to say, Virginia Tech is a Gun-Free School Zone -- at least until last Monday. The gunman must not have known. Imagine his embarrassment! Perhaps there should be signs.
